Solo coaching sessions are only available to students currently enrolled, and regularly attending, technical classes at The Hebden School of Dancing. Solo coaching is the initial step in securing a competitive dance for use at HSD approved competitions/festivals. Hard work and regular practice must be put in away from the studio to ensure the dances are to competition standard before any competition date. Multiple coaching sessions are required to fully learn a routine. The number of sessions is dependent on the level of practice at home and a student's age/ability to retain choreography. The following guidance MUST be followed when securing a solo piece ahead of competition; * Music choice, costume and routine level will all be determined by the school Principal and faculty. There are strict competition guidelines (individual to each competition) that we must follow and therefore preparation is key. * No competitions should be entered without prior authorisation by the Principal. Whilst HSD will arrange a varied competitive schedule throughout the course of the year if you do wish to attend any additional events you must seek approval before entering. * All choreography, music edits and routines remain the property of the school and can not be transferred or performed should a student decide to leave the school mid season. Routines must not be edited or re-choreographed at any point without teacher approval and anyone found to be adapting their choreography (on purpose) will not be eligible for competition entries. * Solo entries will need to be paid upfront for competition and these will be invoiced directly to the parent/guardian. Solos can range from £4 for small festivals through to £20 for larger competitions. We tend to aim for mid-range competitions where the solo entries are typically around £6-8. We will inform you of the price ahead of confirming any entries. * It is at the Principal's discretion as to whether a student is ready to perform at competition. Should a faculty member, or the student themselves, raise concern that the dance is not ready to be performed the decision will be passed to the Principal. All dances will be regularly reviewed by the Principal ahead of the initial competition in the season. * Dances and routines are to be kept for a minimum of 9 months unless otherwise notified by the Principal. Students will not be eligible for new routines in the same style within this 9 month period as from experience it can often take the full season for a competition dance to grown in strength and confidence, and really be performed to it's highest standard. * Dancers can only take solo choreography sessions in styles that they have sufficiently studied and subject to Principal authorisation. Styles include; Classical Ballet Character Ballet Lyrical (must have ballet training) Contemporary Modern Jazz (must have contemporary modern jazz training) Street / Commercial Song/Dance (must have certification to prove singing lessons outside of HSD) Musical Theatre (must have performing arts / contemporary modern jazz or comp team training) Acrobatic Dance (must have the relevant level of acrobatic dance training and/or gymnastics certifications + a technical dance class) * HSD is not responsible for music co-ordination or editing for the day of competition. It remains the parent/carer responsibility to ensure a copy of the music is available in the required format and handed in on competition day for soloists. * All costumes should be arranged a couple of months ahead of competition to give students time to practice in the allocated costume. Costumes can play a large part of the performance and recommendations from the teacher will be given. It is requested that you do not change, adapt or add to any costume decisions once they have been finalised at the final studio rehearsal. Costumes must be approved by Chloe or Nina prior to purchase. * It is not guaranteed a member of staff is available to attend every soloist performance at competition. Therefore, we request a parent/guardian is keen to be involved in the dance practicing process, attendance of the competition and reporting back certifications, placings and report forms. * A pre-comp meeting can be arranged with the parent/guardian ahead of competition day to ensure you are aware of the procedures and requirements (where required.) * Coaching sessions are non refundable & non transferable. We will endeavour, where possible, to reorganise sessions as a gesture of good will, but this cannot be guaranteed. This remains at principal discretion. Any cancelled or missed sessions will not be refunded.
